Subject: Re: IEP for ADHD students

Hello,

Yes, I absolutely support IEPs for students with ADHD in the Richmond School District. I believe this is a medical issue and should be treated as such, and that students should be given the supports they need.

An IEP would be an effective support framework, and then the school board needs to continue to advocate strongly for additional funding for proper levels of resource teachers educational support workers and mental health supports that are needed to offer the appropriate level of support for students with ADHD.

It’s important that students get the help they need as soon as issues arise. I am sorry that your son did not receive the diagnosis or support he needed at school.

My own son has struggled with anxiety since Grade 5 and has had school attendance issues as a result. I have also been advocating (and will continue to advocate) for better mental health programs and supports in addition to IEPs and more funding for ADHD.

This is one reason I chose to run for the Board of Education, as our family experienced first-hand the gaps in services and supports for students with mental health issues.

I am also happy to contact Rob Fleming to ask him to follow through on his promise to have IEPs for ADHD here in BC.

Thank you for writing and for continuing to advocate on this issue on behalf of Richmond students.

Sincerely,

Sandra Nixon

Richmond Education Party”

If you see any other political parties or independent school board candidates who have any policies on the biggest number of students with special needs, ADHD in their platform, please thank them and send me that information so I can post it online.

Always important to reward good behaviour on ADHD because it is so rare by politicians.

Will you join us in asking your local school board trustee candidates if they’ll ask bcndp education minister Rob Fleming to give BC ADHD students #IEPsForADHD as he promised BC ADHD Students 10 months ago?
